Battleship on the go!

ThriftyGuy and I love playing games. Scrabble, trivia, you name it! I guess you can say that we are really a bunch of kids at heart. Recently we were excited by the opportunity to try out the Mini Battleship Keychain made by Basic Fun!  I mean, who didn't love Battleship as a kid?! We were stoked, as the keychain meant that we could easily take a game with us on the go. Vacation, the beach - anywhere!

When I got the keychain, I was pleased at the size. It's not too bulky or heavy - it really is something that you could put on your keychain and carry around! Per the package,

"To play Battleship: Remove box lid from Battle Station platform. Attach Battle Station platform into underside of lid and snap shut. Position ships on ocean grids - each player gets 1 ship. Take turns calling out shots using coordinates on the top and side of the ocean grid. Keep track of hits and misses by writing down all coordinates. Be the first to sink your opponent's Battleship and you win! Two can play! NOTE: The configuration of the Battle Stations has been altered, and the number of Battleships reduced to accommodate the miniature keychain size."

Sounds like fun, right?  Well for starters, I don't know if it was just mine, but I had difficulty opening the lid to the game. It took quite a bit of effort to get it (and the lids of each ocean grid) open. Maybe it's just because it was brand new, but if you are giving this to a child (it's recommended for ages 8 and up), you may need to assist them.

I like how small and compact the game is, with it's 2 little battleships per player. However, I was bummed to find out that you have to write down coordinates that your opponent calls out. I really wish that there were pegs to use (like the original game). Then again, be careful what you wish for - they would have to be very, very tiny and would probably be difficult to use.

Other than my nit-picky complaints, I was excited. I like that I can tote this game around easily and bring fun with me wherever I go (waiting room, camping, plane trip, etc.) I just have to be sure to bring a pad of paper and a couple of pens!

A cautionary tale that must be told (especially to all you Bath & Body Works fans)...

I learned a hard lesson this past week. ThriftyGuy and I went away on vacation and something rather disasterous occurred...

Before we left, I made sure that the house was as safe as possible. Everything was turned off, unplugged, locked up, and as safe and secure as possible. Or so I thought. I had unplugged all of our plug-in air freshener's, placing one from Bath and Body Works on our dining room table as we ran out the door. Plug-ins have been rumored to start fires, so I thought unplugging it was the smartest thing I could do. Boy was I wrong!

When we returned home 6 days later, I found a small puddle of oil under the air freshener. Turns out it had leaked a small amount while we were gone. No big deal, right?

Wrong. I went to wipe it off the black wooden table with a damp cloth and as soon as I swiped the table, a huge chunk of the finish came right off! It was as if you took a cloth in a dish of butter and wiped off the top layer! My jaw hit the floor in surprise and I just stared at my all black table with it's new large light wood colored spot in the middle. Ohmigoodness.

I wiped the fragrance oil plug in off and checked to make sure that it was screwed on tight and no longer leaking. I plugged it in a thought nothing of it. Man - that was my second big mistake. I came home the next day to find that it had again leaked - on the light socket, down the wall, and onto my hardwood floor. My heart sunk. The paint came off my wall and baseboard when we tried to wipe it up! Thank goodness the floor was ok!

So now I am left to figure out how to patch up my not so beautiful table, baseboard, and wall. The minute this happened I thought, "Man. I've really gotta tell people about this in case it happens to them." I am not saying (by any means) to not by plug in fragrances (or to not buy from Bath and Body Works - I love that place!), but just to be advised that they can leak when laying on their side. And after they leak, they can definitely leak again! And most importantly, those fragrance oils can really do some damage to surfaces! So take it from me and the hard lesson I learned - be careful!!
