Some very important notes about our giveaways...

ThriftyGuy and I love being able to offer giveaways for products that we have reviewed and like - and think you'll like too.  Lately, we've had quite a few giveaways.  I know a majority of you LOVE this, while some of you are annoyed by this.  Regardless of your take on it, please know that we only do giveaways with companies we believe in and products that we would actually purchase/have purchased.  We will never mislead you or write a review on a product we don't believe in.  We have actually turned down giveaways in the past because we just didn't think their products were right for ThriftyGrl.

A couple of important things about the giveaways...  They will slow down a bit after the month of July.  They will still be steady and spectacular, but you won't be so inundated with them.  Due to some behind the scenes circumstances (and unfortunate events in our personal lives), the giveaways all backed up for awhile.  That's why you are seeing so many at once - we are finally catching up.  We are almost caught up and will stop flooding you with them soon.  But we will continue to work with companies to let you know of great products and services out there and continue to bring you great giveaways in the future. 

About your personal information...  Please know that the information you give us for a giveaway is highly protected.  We only use it for the purpose of securing a winner and then safely discard it.  Your information is only ever shared if you are a winner; it is only given to the company for the sole purpose of obtaining your prize.  We do not sell information nor will we spam you.  It's not what we are here for.

About entering the giveaways... Most people are concerned about safety and privacy.  That's why we have moved a majority of our giveaways to form entry only.  You will ONLY see a giveaway be via comment entry if a company requests it to be so.  Otherwise, you will always need to enter on a form.  To do so, just glance through the giveaway post quickly.  You will ALWAYS see "Click here to enter the giveaway" toward the bottom of the post in large, bold letters, listed after the giveaway requirements.  That is how you enter.  I only bring this up because lately we have had a few people who have emailed us, the companies, etc. not understanding how to enter.  They then realized that all they had to do was scroll down a bit more and click on the entry form!  Honestly, we LOVE giving away all of these great things - and want you to be eligible and entered to win!  So please be sure to fill out the form!

We have made an effort to simplify the instructions, eligibility, and entry form to make entering ThriftyGrl giveaways easier.  Requirements do vary by giveaway, as company requirements, etc. can make a difference in how we can conduct the giveaway.  Overall, we really have tried to make it easier and hope that it has helped!

Recently I started to think about how I could spruce up the outside of my house; specifically, my front porch. Any Reuben fans out there?

ThriftyGuy is such a HUGE Reuben fan...

He was hesitant when I came across a recipe for a Reuben Dog in the July 2010 issue of Real Simple Magazine.  He can be picky about what he considers to be a good Reuben.  Well, we made these last night and he LOVED them!  And best of all, they were quick, easy, cheap AND delicious!  Basically, the recipe is simple.  Just put together the following ingredients for a great Reuben dog:

• 1 cooked hot dog in a bun
• 2 tablespoons sauerkraut
• 2 tablespoons grated Swiss cheese
• 1 tablespoon Thousand Island dressing

Want to try it this weekend and not spend a fortune doing so?  If you don't want to wait for coupons, sales, etc. yet don't want to spend a lot of money trying out this delicious recipe, here's my recommendation:  Go to Kroger (before Sunday).  Here's what you'll pay:

• Ball Park Franks:  $.99/pack (unless you have the coupon, then it's $1.23 for 2!)
• Kroger Hot Dog Buns:  On sale for $1
• Kroger Brand Thousand Island Dressing:  On sale 4 for $5
• Kroger Brand Sauerkraut:  $.75
• Kroger Brand Sliced Swiss Cheese (replacement for grated; still tasted great!): $1.79 ($1.49 if you buy 10 participating items and get the discount!)

So, you could potentially get all of the above for just $5.48, which would make 8 hot dogs!  That comes out to $.69/dog!  If you are cooking for a crowd and get 2 packs of dogs and buns and 2 cans of sauerkraut, the cost per hot dog comes out to $.45! 

*As a side note to all of you out there who struggle with couponing and sales and wonder if it really is worth it...  We went to Kroger on Sunday, spent less than an hour in the store, and with careful contemplation of the sales and coupons got 55 items (including over $20 in fresh seafood and over $20 in fresh produce!) for $38.  Yep.  It's possible and easy.  We mainly followed our Kroger list, plus used Kroger coupons they mailed to us.  So hang in there - it is totally worth it!

Gel Pro: Comfy, stylish, and easy on the knees!

My friend Jeanne used to always rave about the "squishy mat" in our radiology department at work. Honestly I had no idea what she was talking about until I finally took a stroll down there one day to check it out. This "squishy mat" was a soft, gel-like mat that was placed in front of a frequently used computer in the radiology deparment. The staff told me it was to reduce stress on their knees and back from standing so much. After standing on it, I could definitely see it. And let's be honest; it felt good under my feet and was really fun to step on. I thought that was as far as my "squishy mat" experience would go...

Fast forward a few months... I was reading a magazine and came across an advertisement for Gel Pro, a company that states it has

As someone who stands for 12+ hours at work and then crawls home to make dinner, there are many nights where I feel as though I can barely stand for one more minute (let alone 20 more in front of my stove). And let's face it, those hardwoods can brutal on your feet, knees, and even your back.

Turns out, I was blessed with the opportunity to actually try out a mat from Gel Pro. They sent me a Black Striated 20" x 36" Gel Mat to see what I thought.  The first thing I did was put it in front of my stove and step all over it. It was definitely an "Ahhhhh" kind of moment. The Gel Pro mat not only looks good, but also feels great under your feet! I personally chose my kitchen, as this is where I have hardwoods and spend a lot of my time. I could also see a Gel Pro being a great addition to a workshop, craft room, or anywhere else you do a lot of standing. Another rather amusing thing that I have noticed since puting the Gel Pro in my kitchen is that my guests (without being told about it), tend to graviate toward it and slowly move their feet back and forth on it, similar to a cat kneeding it's paws. Yeah, it really is that fun to step on! 

Honestly, I like the Gel Pro so much that I am contemplating a second one for in front of my kitchen sink!

Recently I noticed that my comforter was getting a little ratty. Tattered and torn from years of use and abuse, I needed a new one. And I wanted a good one. So what is the Calypso Collection all about?  Well, it is their latest addition to their comforter line.  The Calypso comes in two colors so that you can reverse it easily.  It is a down comforter that is specially made to minimize down movement.  Also, many of you will appreciate the fact that the Calypso is hypo-allergenic.

What was my personal experience with the Calypso Collection Comforter like?  First of all, I was impressed at how sleek and sophisticated it looked on my bed.  It has that swanky, hotel appearance (the picture to the left simply does not do it justice!)  Next, was how it actually performed.  This sounds a bit crazy to say, but hear me out:  The Calypso does a great job at keeping you warm, yet has this strange ability to keep you cool.  As in, the materials it is made with make it feel like the wonderful cool side of the pillow that we all are constantly flipping over (literally).  The downside to the Calypso?  If there has to be one, then here it is:  while I love it and it feels amazing and soft and swallows me, it can be noisy.  It kind of rustles if you move it (or have a 5 lb. chihuahua who likes to run around the bed at night, seeking out that one perfect spot).  If you are a light sleeper, this may bug you.  However, it's not to the level of barking dogs, lawn mowers, or pounding hammers in the house being constructed behind you.  Nope.  It's comparable to tissue paper rustling in a gift bag.  And I have a feeling that as we use it more and more and it settles in, this will become less of an issue.  So overall, I am sold.  I love it (so much that I yank ThriftyGuy's share away from him as we both sleep and wrap myself in it like cocoon.  Poor guy!)

Should it stay or should it go?

I just came across a website that I absolutely have to share with you!

I once had a horrible, horrific bout of food poisoning... It involved chicken salad, the hospital, and a new found fear of all that lurks in the back of the refrigerator.  Poor ThriftyGuy.  I am constantly second guessing food and throwing it out just to be safe.  Because you just never know, right?

Another thing I have an issue with is wondering what the best way to store certain foods is.  The store puts certain fruits and veggies out on the shelves, but others swear by putting them in the fridge to extend the life and quality of the product.  Again, what's a girl to do?

Thanks to an article in All You magazine, I have answers to all of the above and then some!  They mentioned the website StillTasty.com, which peaked my interest and made me check it out.  I was in love the minute I visited this free, handy-dandy resource, chock full of great tips and info such as how long products stay good for to how best to store them.  They even have an iPhone app!  Seriously, what a great resource!  Check them out here!  Hope you find it as helpful as I did! : )

It comes on a 16 - 18 inch gold chain and boasts a stunning gold Starfish with flecks of silver stones sprinkled about to add a special touch. It looks absolutely beautiful - the first time I wore it I got tons of compliments! I was so excited and honored to have such a great piece that I was absolutely floored when they sent me my original choice - the gorgeous, jaw dropping Virginia's Fancy Pear Drop Rhinestone Necklace & Earrings Set ! This pear-shaped set is brass base metal with a silver tone finish and looks simply stunning! Wearing it makes me feel like the girls on The Bachelor when they get all dressed up for a fancy evening out with lots of expensive jewels and bling - how fun!
