Taste of Home Cooking School!

Have you ever heard of or been to a Taste of Home Cooking School?

ThriftyGrl & ThriftyGuy's ULTIMATE Shopping Trip - see how we got a FREE ($120) bike!!

ThriftyGuy and I went out and about yesterday.  Since many of you are curious as to what we do in our spare time (and how we get stuff so cheap), I thought I would share.  Honestly, I think this was one of the best trips EVER!

I will start by telling you that I have been wanting a beach cruiser bike FOREVER.  They are usually around $120 - $190 each and since there are two of us, I have held off buying them (since that's a lot of money!)  I have been saving up all of our rebate gift cards that we get back from deals we do and have been contemplating how to get my bike for as cheap as possible.  I kept telling ThriftyGuy that I would get one for free and he just laughed in disbelief.  Well, I didn't get mine for free (it was $84.74), but I certainly did get his without spending a penny!  Here's how our shopping trips went last night:

Our first stop was Kmart.  A few weeks back I happened to notice that in their ad was a coupon for up to $100 in Kmart giftcards when you transferred 4 prescriptions.  Since I have been on some medication after my recent hospital stay, I decided to take advantage of this offer.  (*ThriftyGrl tip:  This is available again in today's Kmart ad for all of you who are interested!)  Three of my prescriptions transferred and were worth the $25 gift cards, but the fourth was only eligible for $19.20 (not a big deal).  I got this Schwinn Beach Cruiser Bike:

Regular price:  $189.99

- in store sale of $10 off

- 4 gift cards worth $94.20

- $5 gift card found in cereal box

- $10 gift certificate from Kellogg's good toward a sporting item at Kmart

Total spent after all discounts = $84.74!!  (after tax)

*AND we got a FREE 2 liter of Pepsi (because they didn't ask us about the March of Dimes!)  Also, I made sure to give them my Kmart rewards card, which allows you to earn rewards on your purchases!  (Click here for more info!)

I was pretty stoked to get my bike for less than $85 (brand new)! 

After that, we headed on over to Target, where we found ThriftyGuy's bike:

The deal at Target was even better...

For Target, I had 4 gift cards (from rebates we received in the mail for various deals) worth $100 to spend.  Also, there is a Target coupon for $10 off any Schwinn bike (on their website).  When we got to the store, we found that the bike that ThriftyGuy wanted (pictured above) was normally $119.99, but was on sale for $109.99.  Meaning it was $110.  Meaning we had $100 in gift cards + a $10 coupon to apply, making it absolutely FREE.  FREE!  Seriously!!  Best deal EVER!!!

Also, when you buy a Schwinn bike, you can take 10% off any Schwinn accessory (so we got a bike tire pump).  We also bought a tire patch kit for $4.29 (gotta be prepared)!

Another great deal?  Sobe drinks are on sale 10 for $10; Buy 10, get a $5 Target gift card (good toward your next purchase).  I wasn't able to get any of the Sobe coupons from Target.com (as they were all gone), but I did get 2 Buy One Get FREE coupons.  So we ended up getting 10 bottles of Sobe for essentially $3!

Also, they had a mini Bop It game for $9.99.  There was a Target coupon for $3 off select games (including Bop It) and a Bop It printable coupon for $5 off, making this game $1.99 after coupons!

So all in all at Target, we got the following:

Bike

Tire Pump

Tire patch kit

10 Sobe drinks

Mini Bop It Game

We ended up getting over $154 worth of items for just $32 out of pocket (or $28 if you consider the Target gift card we got from the Sobe)!!

If any of you remember, I had listed "2 Beach Cruiser Bikes" on my wish list (click here for the post).  Looks like we can cross those off the list! : )  Now to work on rocking chairs for the front porch and a blender (not currently posted on my wish list - ours broke awhile back and I am desperate to make smoothies and margaritas once again)!!

Harris Teeter TRIPLE coupons update - see how we did! : )

I have gotten some emails asking how I am doing so far with Harris Teeter Triple coupons...

I wanted to let everyone know that I did go to Harris Teeter for round 2 of TRIPLE coupon shopping, as I said I was going to (and have gone a coupon more times since). For my second trip (on Thursday), I went to the HT closest to my house, instead of the one I prefer (which is a little further away). I was flabergasted at what I found - the deals there were different(?) Some things were either different in price or not on sale at all. I couldn't believe it. Well, I guess I should have, as this particular HT often disappoints me by often being out of sale items (even on the day the sale begins!) and ALWAYS (regardless of sales) having limited varities to choose from. So I hope that this is not the case at all HT's, but I definitely wanted to give you all a heads up on this eye opening finding.

I actually had quite a few splurges that I went for on my second trip (hey, what's life for if you can't splurge every now and again??) and again on my fourth trip.

And last but not least is our fourth trip (that we made late last night).  Unfortunately, we were so tired that we didn't take a picture of everything when we got home.  I can tell you that we bought 33 items, including 2 HUGE bags of Kingsford charcoal, 2 HUGE angus steaks (they will go a long way - quite a few people could split them!), tons of fruit and veggies, and quite a few things in between!  I will say that this trip was a bit more expensive than I would have hoped, but we really needed charcoal (as we like to cook out a lot and ThriftyGuy is a charcoal fan!)  All in all, I would say we didn't do too bad, considering we got a cart full of food for $30 (when you subtract the charcoal cost)!

Some of you have asked why you hear of some people getting their grocery trips for even cheaper...  My answer is this - we could have went to the store and only picked up everything that was free.  However, ThriftyGuy and I have learned balance and what is good for us.  We used to only eat what was free or cheap (all the time).  We try to live a healthier lifestyle (although sometimes we do splurge or buy things for others on our trips), so we do the best we can with what we have.  You could get out of the store with paying next to nothing.  It is completely up to you, your lifestyle, and what you are looking for!

I know I promised Harris Teeter TRIPLE COUPON deals last night but didn't quite deliver. 

Thing is, ThriftyGuy and I like to list our own deals that we find (we don't take them from other websites or anything like that - it's just not our style).  We want to give you information that we know is 100% legit and true.  Which is why we shopped the ENTIRE Harris Teeter last night.  For 3 hours.  Yep, you heard right - 3 hours (even after we both worked all day!  I actually found myself nodding off while James, our cashier, checked us out at midnight! Lol...he just laughed and shook his head at me.) 

We scanned the store high and low for deals to tell you about.  Why?  Because we know that some people have good intentions with their coupons, but get frustrated trying to pair them with sales and end up not using them at all (and *gasp* end up paying full price for everything! Yikes!!)  Our hope is that if we list the deals, you can quickly scan the list to see what you need, grab your coupons, and go!  (And only be in the store for minutes, not hours like us!  Lol...)
