Great FREEBIE opportunity for all you writers out there! Publish your own book for FREE!

Have you ever visited Lulu.com before?  They describe themselves as
"...an online self-publisher and digital marketplace that empowers creators to publish, sell and profit from their work. With no up-front cost, individuals and organizations are fully enabled to set the price of their creations and the amount of creator revenue they want to earn. Furthermore, Lulu creators retain complete control over editorial content, copyright and distribution. Translated into seven languages, with 1.3 million registered members from over 80 countries, Lulu is changing the world of publishing."
Right now, Lulu is offering quite an opportunity for all you writers out there - you can publish your own book for FREE!  I read it and thought the same thing you are.... what a great offer!  Here is what Nick at Lulu.com has to say about it:
"I don’t know about you, but my favorite price is always free. Love and ideas are some of the greatest things in life, and both are completely free. They are also the main components in creating a book. When you love what you’re writing and you come up with interesting and intriguing new ideas, you write great books. At Lulu, our goal is to empower you to do what you love and help you publish a great book.

To help you finish your next book we’re making it easier than ever by providing you with a free copy! If you publish something new between 2/16 and 3/16, we’ll send you a FREE proof copy.

Now, I know you may be thinking – “But Nick, I already published my book and I can’t write a new one in the next month!” Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here are some ideas we’ve come up with and I’m sure you can come up with a few of your own.

* Create a hardcover version of your book – If you haven’t done so already, it’s never too late to turn your paperback book into a hardcover. The process is simple, and if we don’t already offer a hardcover size of your paperback, you can always reformat it for the new version.

* Make a special version of your book. For example, you could add photos or illustrations to the book that help highlight the chapters.

* Challenge yourself. Who says you can’t finish your book by 3/16? Heck, who says you can’t write an entirely new book by then? Challenge yourself and your reward is a free copy of your brand new book. You can do it!

* Collaborate with a friend on a book. You can either write something new together or work on finishing up a book one of you has already started. Either way you get to create something together!

Whatever you decide, we want to help. So get started!

Terms and Conditions:

Promotion runs from 2/16 – 3/16. Creators are eligible for a free proof copy of a newly published work at www.lulu.com up to a value of $25. Photo books and calendars are not eligible for this offer. Shipping is not included in the offer. Creator will receive a coupon code by email once the new work is published."

UPDATE on Everyday with Rachel Ray $2.99/year deal (expires tonight at midnight!)

I don't think ThriftyGuy realized what a PHENOMENAL deal he posted this morning...  I wanted to re-list it so that everyone would be able to take advantage of it, should they want to!

Use the code everyday at checkout to recieve this special price!

**Update: Many people have been having problems getting the Rachel Ray deal.  ThriftyGuy reported it this morning and I was SO EXCITED and wanting to share it with everyone that I reposted it so that any one who wanted it could get it.  Many people had problems with the site and I kept trying to quickly figure out why. The link itself worked for a majority of readers without any problems (which is why I was confused at how it could intermittently be working one minute and not the next).  Joining helped some people and clearing cache worked for others, but still there were some people that couldn't get the deal for some unknown reason (to me).  Both a reader and ThriftyGuy have since contacted me to tell me that you do need to use the code "everday" at checkout to get this deal.  That will teach me to get so excited and not read thoroughly.  I will admit that I myself did not have to use the code (and neither did a bunch of others).  It seems (for whatever reason) to be intermittent if you have to use it or not.  If you are getting a page that is telling you the cost is $23.99, make sure to enter the code "everyday" so that the final price comes up at $2.99/year.  Again, my sincerest apologies.  I cannot tell you how absolutely horrible I feel.  I never, ever want to upset or stress anyone out.  I always get so excited when I come across something great and want to shout deals from the rooftop so that you all can participate as well. I usually have a great handle on the deal.  This time, I did not and for this I am truly, truly sorry.  I hope that everyone who wanted the deal was able to get it.

The end of an era.... No more Old Navy Weekly?!?

We knew it had to end sooner or later...

I reported yesterday morning that Old Navy Weekly is nearing it's end.  As of March 4th, things will be changing - Old Navy Weekly will no longer reset each week with coupons (like we are used to).  They do, however, plan to offer deals and coupons to its fans through other means such as social networking sites (Twitter and Facebook), mobile phones (via text message), and even through Google.

Now many of you are asking for a confirmed source for this information. I get this. However, due to the nature of this information, the source(s) have requested to remain anonymous. I know that doesn't give us much credit behind our story, but trust that we wouldn't tell you something that wasn't presented to us in good faith. I can also tell you that there is definitely buzz around the internet about this as well, and some people are also hearing March 4th while a few others are reporting March 7th.  They may be different dates, but the common denominator is the fact that ONW is, in fact, coming to an end soon. Also please note that I never said that ONW is officially over as of this minute. There could be one final reset in the works.... we'll have to wait and see what happens this Thursday! And after ONW is no longer (March 4th), there will still be other methods of getting coupons; however, I do not know the values or quantities that will be made available

As I said before, ThriftyGrl and I will definitely miss all of the excitement around the Old Navy Weekly website each and every Thursday!  Don't worry - we will continue to stay on top of the latest deals for Old Navy!

An important note about the current Ruby Tuesday's coupon circulating (and a few other important things you should know)....

I love blogging.... I love that I get to share ideas and tips with people and help others out in any way I can.  I love the fact that the Internet is always abuzz with tons of good deals and that there are lots of other bloggers out there helping people in the same way.

I do however, want to caution you on what you may be seeing on some other sites....

Many people are talking about and listing a Buy One Get One Free coupon for Ruby Tuesday'sYou will not see that coupon listed on ThriftyGrl.  I was emailed the same coupon not only by Ruby Tuesday's, but also by a reader.  I want you to know that ThriftyGuy and I take this website (and our commitment to you) very seriously and we try to look into each and every thing we post as much as we possibly can so that we know in our hearts we are giving you a good, feasible deal.  Those Ruby Tuesday coupons have unique coupon codes, meant for one time use only.  Our local restaurant confirmed this.  (One small way to tell is to read the fine print at the bottom of the coupon.  Yes, that is why we always not only read the small print, but also list it for you as well!  On this coupon it clearly states, "Coupons cannot be resold, traded, or used multiple times."  There is also a unique number at the bottom of the coupon.)  Now who is not to say that your local Ruby Tuesday's will accept it or not (kind of how stores double coupons that clearly state "Do not double")? However I, in good conscience, cannot list it as a deal.  How embarrassing or upsetting would it be to go there and find out the hard way?

We have excluded deals for simliar reasons in the past (ex:  coupons that are one time use only, freebies that you are signing up for that are not legit/are phishing scams, etc.)  I am not, by any means, saying anything negative about other websites nor am I saying that we are perfect.  There are times that we have really looked into something and thought it was legit (as others have as well) and unfortunately it turns out not to be.  But I do promise you this readers - ThriftyGuy and I take every step possible to look through deals as they are emailed to us.  We will not post anything we feel is invalid or not worthy of your time.  We only post items that we find ourselves or others email us about that we feel will help benefit you and are easy, legit deals.

Also something to think about: the more that people circulate deals that are not legit and people try to use them, the more upset stores are becoming. I have heard of stores stopping certain deals/promotions due to coupon abuse. I also have a HUGE issue with other websites encouraging immoral actions... For example: a sale is starting at a store one day so they encourage you to shop the night before so that you have your pick of the items and then can go back for price adjustments the next day. Not only is that unfair to those who follow the rules and do things the proper way, but also you will note that some stores are now getting stricter with price adjustments because of this. Can you imagine being an honest shopper, not knowing about a sale and finding out you paid more than you should have?  You go back, wanting the price difference but thanks to this new trend (and stores being stricter on policies) you cannot get it?! Seriously!  Please do the right thing so that the stores do not punish the rest of us! That is why you will never see ThriftyGrl promote these such actions on this website!

I know that all of you are here for good, honest deals.  And that is what we are here to provide you.  We honestly love doing this!!  And we truly hope that you enjoy ThriftyGrl and find it helpful!

So to answer one reader's question, that is why you may not see some deals listed on ThriftyGrl that are listed elsewhere.  Again, nothing is wrong with those other websites - everyone has their own unique take on saving money and has something great to bring to the table.  Just make sure you look the deal over yourself (read the fine print and don't be scared to call the store in question!)  If you ever have a question about a deal/coupon/freebie/tip, etc.  feel free to email us and we will be more than glad to look into it for you!

What's on YOUR wish list??

We all have a wish list - that list of things we yearn to have that sits in the back of our head and reminds us of itself from time to time....

I was thinking of this the other day.  There are always items that we want, but some of us happen to wait longer than others to obtain them (you know, the whole instant gratification crowd vs. the thrifty I-will-wait-for-a-deal-crowd).  I, as you may have guessed, will wait and wait (and wait) until the item I want is either free or on an incredible deal.  This takes a lot of patience (and sometimes some whining - poor ThriftyGuy!  But being able to pout every now and again saves me from actually going out and buying what I want.)  For instance, I wanted a new bedroom TV.  The volume on ours was getting funky and the colors seemed off.  Yet I wanted a good deal.  I waited.  And waited.  And seven years later (LOL) finally bought one.

I know that normal people may not always wait so long to get what they want, but hopefully you will at least wait until you can get a good deal on the item you have in mind (and hopefully it doesn't take you 7 long years of waiting, lol).  Within the past few months, I added 2 more items to my mental "wish list":  a new iron (I will admit to ruining ours in a craft project gone wrong) and a new bed for ThriftyDog (who would lay very patiently for hours at a time on a rather stiff dog pillow as I made my posts for the day).  Again, I was determined to wait until I got a good deal on these items.  And good deals did I get - about 2 weeks ago we had an excessive amount of Register Rewards to use up at Walgreens.  So guess what I got for FREE?  Yep, you guessed it - my iron! : )  (Note - it is not a huge fancy iron, just a basic one.  I don't need all the bells and whistles.  Just a regular iron suits me fine.)  And the week before that?  Really cute, soft and cushy dog beds went on sale for $4.99 (how cheap is that?!) at CVS.  And guess who had the Extra Bucks to make it FREE?!  Let's just say that ThriftyDog seems mighty happy in her new (plush) bed! : )

So I am happy to say that my list got shorter by 2 items - and obtaining them cost me absolutely nothing!  Of course I still have some big ticket items that remain on the list, but you know me - I am holding out for good deals!

My hope in posting this "wish list" article is that you will share your wish list with me and together we can watch out for deals on each other's lists!  How great would that be - getting what you want for free or next to nothing?

If you are interested and want to be a part, just leave a comment with the items you are looking to get a deal on.  It may take time to get them on sale, but just remember - patience definitely pays off : )

Oh yeah.... here's a peek at my list:

Call me crazy, but I think I can get the bottom two items absolutely FREE or super, super cheap.  I know that may sound unbelievable, but give me time - I have some tricks up my sleeve! ; )

ThriftyGuy's Shopping Trip...

It's funny how many people email me and ask specifically about our weekly shopping trips, how much we spend, save, etc.  That's mainly why I have started listing the weekly deals for stores such as Kroger, Harris Teeter, Walgreens, CVS, and any others that have great deals for the week.  I also from time to time will show what I have bought, as readers have given me the feedback that they not only find it helpful, but also inspirational.  Hey, anything I can do to help! : )

Today I wanted to change it up and give you an overall view of how we did (as opposed to listing each store individually).  ThriftyGuy actually did the shopping as I need to study for a class tomorrow.  I wanted to show that with a bit of time (and lots of coupons! : )  you can really get a lot of bang for your buck!

Here is how we did:

ThriftyGuy shopped at Walgreens, Harris Teeter, and Kroger.  He bought both items on sale and some splurges (because we all know that sometimes you need that special item you have been waiting to get).  Note that our weekly budget for ALL things coming into the house is $75.  Here is a picture of everything he bought:

Click on the picture to open a bigger version in a new window.

There are 69 items total.  Yes, that includes 3 bags of potting soil (8lbs. each), an iron (which I desperately needed because ours died out), 2 gallons of tea, various produce, two 4-packs of yogurt, floss picks, hair ties, medicine, 2 cans of cappuccino (ThriftyGuy's splurge : ) and numerous other necessities and goodies tucked in there.

For all 69 items, he spent a total of $63.72 (that averages to $.92 an item!  Wow - I don't know the last time I got an iron for $.92!) and saved a total of $142.36.

The even better news?  We are still $11.28 under budget for the week! : )

Well, I hope that this, along with the deals posted earlier help you to snag some great bargains this week!

How did you do on your shopping trip this week?  Are you under your budget and want to shout it loud and proud?  Or maybe you need some help sticking to it?  Either way, leave a comment and let us know!
