Getting everything you need while sticking to your budget...

Time and time again people say to me, "Okay, so there are some free/cheap things at the store, but I can't just buy what's on sale this week. How am I supposed to shop for my entire family and still save money?" I also hear people say, "I bet all of the free and cheap stuff is just junk or unhealthy. There's no way you can eat decent, get all the things you want, and still stay within your budget." Well, it is my goal to show you how ThriftyGuy and I do it. We have learned a lot over the years: how to get things cheap and free, the fact that you don't necessarily have to take everything that is cheap and free (especially if you don't need it), and how to find a happy balance of everything in between. Take today's shopping trip for example; ThriftyGuy did all the shopping today based on the deals that we found in today's paper. Our weekly goal is $75. Here’s how we did:

This one's for all the Mama's out there...

Awhile back I posted about Udder Covers - a company that provides fashionable cover-ups for when you are nursing in public.  Believe me, they are cute!  And the deal was awesome - use a code to get a FREE cover - all you had to pay was shipping!  And never mind if you weren't an expecting mother - these would make for a wonderful gift for any mother-to-be!

Well, it just so happens that I received an email from them announcing ANOTHER promotion!  Here'swhat they had to say,
"We wanted to say thanks for being one of our Planning Family members and give you a promo code for a free $32 nursing cover at uddercovers.com (if you're not currently breastfeeding they make great baby shower and holiday gifts)!

We have made an arrangement with http://www.uddercovers.com/ so you can get one nursing cover (regular price $32) free. You just pay the shipping. The code is "Family2010".

Go to uddercovers.com, click on "Shop Now", select the product you would like (they also have 3 piece gift sets available with this promotion) and you will automatically be directed to the center of the page where you can enter in the promo code! Type in "Family2010" and it will pull up the ones available. They are selling out fast. You can use the code more than once - you just have to open a new browser/window to do so. Good Luck!

This promotion gives you a $32.00 discount off your total order no matter what you put in your cart! This promotion code is valid once per transaction, so you can order as many times as you would like!

Thanks again,
Planning Family"
How awesome is that?!  So if you didn't get one the first time around, you are in luck!  And if you did - well, it looks like you can get another!  : )

Lots of FREE stuff at Walgreens this week (and a few other good deals too!)

This week there are quite a few FREE items at Walgreens, which include the following:
• Zicam Cold Sore Swabs: On sale for $10 -$3 coupon on pack - $7 in Register Rewards = FREE!

• Vitamin Schtick Lip Care: On sale for $1.99 - $1.99 in Register Rewards =FREE!

• Blink tears: On sale for $7.99 - $7.99 in Register Rewards = FREE!

• Joint Juice (30 pack): On sale for $10 - $10 in Register Rewards = FREE!

• Scalpicin Medicated Wipes (12 pack): On sale for $5.99 - $5.99 in Register Rewards = FREE!
Also, some good deals to note are:

• Cheez-It Crackers: On sale for 2/$5 - $2 in Register Rewards –$1 off 2 packages of Cheez-It crackers coupon (exp. 2/7/10) = 2 packages for $2!

• Kellogg’s Corn Flakes: On an sale for $1 - $1 off any two packages Kellogg’s Corn Flakes (expires 2/7/10) = 2 boxes for $1!

• Gillette Fusion Razor: On sale for $8.99 - $4 in Register Rewards - $2 off any one Gillette Fusion Razor coupon (*Note: this coupon expires today!) = Final price of $2.99!
These deals are even better if you have any previous Register Rewards to use up! Just remember that you have to have as many items as you do coupons in order to use all of your coupons (don't worry - I find that weird too!) If you are stumped, look for small filler items that are on sale such as gum, candy, snacks, or chapstick. Sometimes you have to pay a small amount (say, $.29) to be able to use a few bucks in Register Rewards – totally worth it in the end!!

CVS deals - lots of sneaky ways to save money this week!

At first glance of the CVS ad this week, I was disappointed - there just didn't seem to be any great deals. However, if once I looked deeper into the ads and mycoupon books, I found there are actually some really good deals going on!
• Renuzit Adjustable Air Freshener: On sale for $.99 - coupon for Buy Two Get One Free (expires 2/28/10) = 3 for $1.98!

• Dove Men + Care: On sale for $5.49 - $5.49 in Extra Bucks- $1.25 coupon off any DoveMen + Care body wash coupon (found in today's Sunday paper; expires 4/25/10) = MONEY MAKER!
On the back page of this week's CVS ad, you will find an offer that states when you spend $25 on participating P&G or Coke products, you will get $10 in Extra Bucks! It is up to you how you add up to the $25, but at least make sure you look through your coupon books and gather the following to help make your savings even greater!

• Save $1 on any size Tide (*Note this coupon expires today!)

• Save $.25 off any one size Bounty paper towels (*Note this coupon expires today!)

• Pringles: $1 off any four SuperStack Pringles (found in today's Sunday paper; expires 2/28/10)

• Save $.75 on any one path of Duracell Copper top 4-pack or larger (*Note: this coupon expires today!)

• Save $3 off any two Pantene products exclusive trial size (*Note this coupon expires today!)
Also, I wanted to ask: are you signed up to receive CVS e-mails? If not, you are missing out! They send a TON of coupons and rewards via e-mail! In fact, if you are already subscribed like I am you should have received a coupon that allows you to save $5 on any purchase of $30 or more with your ExtraCare card this week (it expires today)!

Another great way to save is that CVS is offering DOUBLE Extra Bucks from now until March 15, 2010! Make sure you cut the coupon on page 14 of their ad and present it with your order!

Boy, the savings just keep coming and coming! Want another way to add up savings at CVS? Don't forget to take your bag with your green tag attached and have them scan it at the register. It may not seem like a lot, but those Extra Bucks will sure add up!

The deals continue at Kroger this week!

I am happy to see that Kroger continues with its BIG-GAME GREATS Sale! If you're not familiar with what this sale entails, don't worry, it's just an easy way to save more money!  Basically when you buy any 10 participating items with your Kroger plus card, you save an additional five dollars off your total. List of FREE medications, diabetic supplies, pharamacy discounts, samples, coupons, and more!

People often come to me and ask if I know how to get any discounts regarding medications and/or medical supplies. I know times are tougher than ever, and it makes me sad how expensive it is just to be able to afford necessary medications and supplies. I try my best to pass along any savings I possibly can.

Here are a few that I have run across:

Free Diabetes Meter from Diabetes Connect: I know how important these can be to managing your blood sugars. Not only do I see diabetics every day in the emergency department, but my mother also has recently found out that she is diabetic. Wilford Brimley had it right when he said, "Check your blood sugar, check it often." What better way to do so than by using a FREE blood sugar meter? Diabetes Connect is offering a free OneTouch® UltraMini™ Meter in the color of your choice. All you have to do is fill out the form to see if you qualify.

I've never personally smoked, but I have seen people try to quit and have great difficulty due to how addictive cigarettes are. I watch my mother struggled with this for years and thank goodness she finally made the decision and was able to quit. I'm so very very proud of her and her healthy new healthy lifestyle! If you are looking to quit smoking, you can sign up and receive a free Sample of NicoDerm CQ and a $7 coupon for NicoDerm® CQ® with Smart Control!

• Save $.50 off any Betty Crocker Warm Delights Bowls (these go on sale often, especially at Harris Teeter, and we use these coupons to get them super, super cheap or even for FREE!)
These are just a couple examples of some great coupons you may want to print and have on hand for future sales. Depending on your taste, there may be more that you are interested in! Just be sure to print them before the site resets for the new month. Also important to note:  Coupons.com asks you to "Enter your ZIP Code for even more coupons in your area", so some coupons may differ depending on where you live.

Earn money for your old books AND magazines!

I had the pleasure of getting to know one of our new subscribers, Stacy from Texas! She had a really great tip that I wanted to share with all of you:
"I also wanted to give you a tip that I do, and have been doing for the past few years. You and your readers may find it useful. A lot of people have used bookstores in their cities/towns. Mine is Half Price Books which is a chain in a lot of cities, but there are many other small town used book stores. Anyway, most people just think they can get money for used books, but every week I take my magazines there. I’m a magazine junkie and I subscribe to about 20 mags. Most I get for super cheap on Amazon (Which you've talked about so I know you know about that) and others I get for free from promotions thru websites (Which you also mention, Thank you Value Mags!!). Usually they give me $.25-$.50 per mag but hey this adds up and is better than just throwing it out once you read....I keep a magazine money jar and use the money for my pleasure whether it be for a margarita or my favorite meal out...You get the idea..."
Great tip Stacy! What a great way to earn some money with your old books and magazines!

*Note: Half Price Books are not located in every state (we do not have any here in NC). Click here for their store locator.

60 Delicious Shrimp Recipes from Martha Stewart

I got e-mail from Martha Stewart's Everyday Food that I just had to share! I don't know about you, but I am a shrimp fanatic! I hate to admit it because it probably sounds really strange when I say it out loud, but my favorite way to eat shrimp is when it's cold (peel and eat) and I let it sit in a bowl of lemon juice for a few minutes. Weird, I know! Lol… Anyway, the e-mail from Everyday Food provided 60 different ways to prepare shrimp! I looked through it and I can honestly say that each recipe was absolutely delicious - that is why I wanted to share it with you! : )

L'Oreal Paris Lash Boosting Regimen

L'Oreal Paris Lash Boosting Regimen
    January 26, 2010

A little over six weeks ago BzzAgent offered me an opportunity to try out the new Lash Boosting Regimen by L'Oreal Paris. I was excited, yet a bit nervous. I'm someone who has pretty long eyelashes, however I've always wanted them to be fuller. I love to wear false eyelashes on an evening out, not to make my eyelashes longer but to make up them appear more full and luscious. I have looked into eyelashes extensions, but was absolutely astounded at how astronomical the cost is. I've also contemplated using Latisse, but was not only turned off by the extraordinary price (around $140!), but also some of the adverse effects it can have, such as eye itching, dryness, and irritation as well as potential visual side effects such as decreased vision. I'm someone who has had LASIK eye surgery, already battles dry eyes, and does not want to risk doing any damage to my vision. Also, the risk of skin and iris color changes was a little unnerving. So needless to say signing up for this BzzCampaign was a little scary. With L'Oreal be like Latisse? Or would I get my hopes up and the product turn out to be a flop?

I got my package in the mail, which contained an information packet, L'Oreal Paris Concentrated Lash Boosting Serum, and L'Oreal Paris Double Extend Lash Boosting Mascara. I was a little bummed at the commitment of using it twice a day for 4 full weeks, but was hopeful that it would work. My findings/results proved to be more shocking than I could've imagined…

Wondering how it works? Each night before bed you apply the L'Oreal Paris Concentrated Lash Boosting Serum to bare lashes. Then again in the morning, apply the Lash Boosting Serum followed by the L'Oreal Paris Double Extend Lash Boosting Mascara. And that's it - it's really that simple!

It was toward the end of the first week that I declared to my husband out loud, "If I'm not mistaken, this stuff is already working!" I had to take pictures every so often for this project, but wasn't sure if I can actually see a difference in the pictures themselves (I really need to get a new camera!) However, at work many of my patients and their family members kept exclaiming over and over again, "Look at your eyelashes! They're absolutely beautiful! How do you get them to be so long?" If I hadn't known better, I would've sworn that BzzAgent planted them secretly to make me feel better, LOL.

So what were my findings overall? I really felt that this product worked well and was overall very satisfied! There were times when I accidentally applied the Lash Boosting Serum a smidge above my lash line (I will admit I am a bit clumsy). I was worried if this would have any weird effects… Well, you wouldn't be able to see it with the naked eye, but I have one of those 15x magnifying mirrors and in it you can see slightly (less than 1 mm) above my lash line there are new lashes growing. Talk about proof that the product actually works! I also feel that my eyelashes definitely are more full and longer. Another benefit? Before, it was nothing for me to lose quite a few eyelashes a day. Honestly, I cannot remember the last time one of my eyelashes fell out since starting this campaign. So their promise to see less lash fall-out was absolutely correct. And for those of you wondering, I did not experience any eye redness, dryness, or irritation. I also did not have any dreaded skin darkening or iris color changes. Thank goodness!

My overall thoughts? I will be very honest and forthcoming with my feelings about this product: the L'Oreal Paris Concentrated Lash Boosting Serum is really easy to use. However, the Double Extend Lash Boosting Mascara was not really my favorite product. There are two sides to the product; the Lash Boosting Primer (which is a base coat to prime and extend lashes, and is white in color) and the Ultra-Lengthening Mascara Topcoat (which is said to instantly lengthen your lashes up to 80%, and comes in Black and Blackest Black). I found that using the Lash Boosting Primer left white flaky bits in my eyelashes, no matter how sparsely I applied it. And by the time I got to the Ultra-Lengthening Mascara Topcoat, my eyelashes felt so full of product and weighed down; they were very stiff and had that dreaded spiderlike appearance.

I would like to point out that this is just my opinion and that when it comes to mascara I'm usually pretty picky and stick to one brand. It could be that the L'Oreal Paris Double Extend Lash Boosting Mascara works great for others, however, it just isn't for me. I did try switching to just using the L'Oreal Paris Concentrated Lash Boosting Serum twice a day with my regular mascara, but still found that my eyelashes were stiff and my mascara was applying in a cake-like fashion. I was true to my four-week trial, but afterward switched to using the L'Oreal Paris Concentrated Lash Boosting Serum at night only. What I found was shocking; my upper eyelashes were so soft, full, and luscious it was insane! And adding my routine mascara to it only increased it! Any product that makes me forget wanting to put on false eyelashes for a night on the town is not only absolutely amazing but also completely worthy of my recommendation!

One thing I'm bummed about? I really wish they would come out with a product that you could use on your lower lashes. I do realize that this product works so well that your lower lashes would probably end up way too long (can you imagine? LOL…) but it would be nice to have something to beef up those lower lashes!

Also an issue: I know that some people are not too excited that this product costs anywhere from $15-$20 at local retail stores. My opinion on the matter? This stuff is the real deal and really works! And at only $20 compared to $140 for Latisse (and all its potential side effects), I would say you're getting one heck of a deal! Also, don't forget that they actually offer coupons in the Sunday paper for this product. Places like CVS and Walgreens are offering additional discounts; those, in conjunction with your coupon and any Extra Bucks or Register Rewards you have could lead to you getting this product super cheap or even free!  : )

Well, that's just my two cents on the product. Have any of you tried it? Let me know what you think!
